Roy Hodgson takes England to Euro 2012 in Ukraine and Poland

Unlike club football where it can be perfectly reasonable to pick and choose a club to support based on a number of different factors, international football is very much a case of being stuck with what you’ve been given.  Unless, it seems, you’re one of a growing number of England fans who seem to think they can abandon their native country and declare support for another nation, whilst continuing to criticise the inevitable failure of the England team as some kind of justification for this decision to defect.

You don’t have to be a nationalistic, right wing, patriotic flag waver to recognise which national football team you should probably support.  It should be the easiest football supporting decision to make, even if the outcome of this decision isn’t very pleasing, rewarding, or exciting.

There are lucky people who have more than one nationality, and even then there’s probably more of an affinity to one of these nations, but for the majority of football fans the national team should be the one thing they don’t have a choice in.  If England suddenly became one of the better sides in world football, then the issue of English people supporting other teams would surely arise less frequently and probably cease to exist.

An earlier article on Soccer Football shows how certain fans can feel more of a link to their club team than they do their national one.  Could there be glory hunting fans in international football as well as club football?  As this article explains, they aren’t real fans.

Dave Whelan and DW Fitness at the DW Stadium

Dave Whelan

During the past day or two the identities of the mysterious “Sky Sources” have been uncovered – in a café in Wigan. “Sky Sources” are usually the origin of any story Sky aren’t 100% sure about but want to be the first to report just in case, in true glorified tabloid fashion. It has recently been leaked that these sources consist of Dave Whelan.

Whelan has excelled in his role of late, appearing regularly on Sky Sports’ 24 hour advertisement channel, otherwise known as Sky Sports News, as a primary source for many of the breaking stories of the day. He has kept close tabs on Roberto Martinez, who he affectionately calls “Roberto”, as Liverpool’s owners interrupt the Spaniards holiday in America by interviewing him for the poisoned chalice that is the Liverpool FC Head Coach of a Few Players in the First Team role.

The straight talking Wiganer has upset many Liverpool fans who don’t want their dirty laundry aired in public, but the same fans have also asked for more transparency from their own set of owners so Whelan thinks he’s doing them a favour. However, his insight into the Liverpool’s recruitment procedure has been thoroughly investigated, and was eventually attributed to the red top newspapers he read whilst waiting at the local cafe for steak pie and chips, twice.

Having written down FSGs managerial short list whilst letting the food go down, he turned his attention further along the M62 to Manchester United, where he conjured up a story about Sir Alex Ferguson’s career plans. After a short brainstorming session conducted on a sandwich board with valuable input from the rest of the café’s clientèle, he had gathered enough exclusive information to keep Sky Sports News going for at least four months.

As well as the revelation that “Sky Sources” originate from a café in Wigan, Soccer Football’s own sources can exclusively reveal that Whelan has applied for Jim White’s job on Sky Sports News, and that he proposes the channel be renamed, Dave Whelan.

Here’s Whelan’s latest exclusive – a photo he took of Roberto Martinez and John Henry in Miami (or one he got Gladys from the café to whip up on Photoshop, using her internet computer).

Roberto Martinez and John Henry - apparently.

Didier Drogba - Available on a free transfer.

Didier Drogba is available on a "free" transfer this summer.

Below is a list of footballers in the Premier League who will be out of contract this summer, or who have already been released by their clubs. Chelsea especially have a number of high profile players whose contracts run out at the end of the 2011/12 season, and club legend Didier Drogba has already announced his intention to leave the club this summer at the age of 34. His last kick of a ball for the club being the winning penalty in the Champions League final. Other players with contracts expiring at the London club include Jose Bosingwa and Soloman Kalou.

Many players from the clubs relegated from the Premier League will be looking for jobs elsewhere, with the most promising of these players being Blackburn’s Canadian forward Junior Hoilett.

Clubs can view this time of year as a chance to clear out players who may not have a role at the club and are taking up valuable space on the wage bill, but for some younger players it is a worrying time, as they get their agents to work over time in order to find them a club and a future in the game.

There will be a few bargains to be had along the way. Who would you sign?

Radamel Falcao celebrates a goal for Athletico Madrid

Chelsea could make Radamel Falcao their main transfer target.

Eden Hazard is still confusing everybody with stories being leaked firstly saying he wants to play in blue, then saying he wants to play in Manchester.  Whilst this suggests Manchester City, many Manchester United fans are still hopeful he will join a team who play in red.

Another player linked with the red side of Manchester is Everton’s Leighton Baines. Rumours suggest the clubs have already been in contact and Manchester United have bid around £12m.

Newcastle will continue their shopping on the continent, as they approach French champions Montpellier for central defender and captain Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, and return to Lille for defender Mathieu Debuchy.

Chelsea‘s Champions League win means they will have much more clout in this transfer window.  If they hadn’t won the competition they wouldn’t have been able to offer Champions League football to prospective signings next season, but now they can offer it as the defending champions.  Falcao of Europa League champions Athletico Madrid could be their big signing in the striking department this summer.

Chelsea’s Champions League win dealt a bitter blow to Spurs ambitions for next season, as they won’t qualify for the Champions League next season despite finishing fourth in the Premier League.  Gareth Bale and Luka Modric will be linked with moves away from the club all summer, and there is likely to be a queue of clubs after their services.

Team of the season 2011-12 graphic and formation

Premier League team of the season 2011/12

We’ve now reached the end of one of the strangest and most exciting seasons in Premier League history. The FA Cup winners and Champions League finalists Chelsea finished 6th, big spending soccer ballers Liverpool win the League Cup but finish 8th below Everton, and Manchester City wait until the last few minutes of the season to secure their status as the best team in England, and claim the title for the first time since 1968.  Even now all the games have been played, the European spots are still undecided as Chelsea can qualify for next seasons Champions League if they win the final next week, meaning Spurs would miss out on Europe’s most lucrative and prestigious competition, and Newcastle would miss out on Europe altogether.

Deciding upon a team of the season has been difficult due to many players enjoying their best runs of form either before or after Christmas, and very few players performing consistently well for the entire campaign.  Add to this some of the most successful January transfers in recent years and you could pick several teams of the season based on certain conditions, as has been done here by Miguel Delaney for The Score.  Below are the Soccer Football picks, as well as some honourable mentions.

Formation
The typical 4-4-2 formation has been avoided due to the prominence of attacking play this season, and a slight nod towards Roberto Martinez who had great success with a 3-4-3 / 3-5-2 formation later on in the season. Maybe if he’d have opted for this formation earlier, Wigan might have been as much of a revelation as Brendan Rodger’s Swansea.  Unlike Wigan, this version has abandoned the full backs altogether, which means no place in the team for the likes of Kyle Walker, Leighton Baines, Branislav Ivanovic, or Angel Rangel to name just a few of the best full backs in the league this season.

Goalkeeper
Joe Hart
gets the nod between the posts, which will no doubt put the mockers on him for the important international competition this summer, in which he’ll surely be quite busy.  Tim Krul and Michel Vorm were also in the running, as were the premier league stalwarts Brad Friedel and Petr Cech.

Defence
The three centre backs chosen make a real difference the their respective teams, and their first XI looks a lot more reassuring to fans of their club’s with them in it. An Arsenal side without Thomas Vermaelen, Manchester City without Vincent Kompany, and Newcastle without the much improved Fabricio Coloccini, all look a lot weaker and more vulnerable at the back.  They’ve played big parts in their team’s successes this season.

Midfield
To start with the engine room, Ramires was playing well for Chelsea when playing well for Chelsea was going out of fashion, and was performing well week in week out even before his heroics against Barcelona, and in the FA Cup final. Similarly Yaya Toure has been a colossus in the middle for Manchester City, playing well in both defensive and attacking roles through the middle and generally being the big game player his big game wages require.

Further forward, Tottenham reaped the rewards for managing to keep hold of Luka Modric despite a lack of Champions League football this season.  The Croatian pulled the strings in the middle for Spurs – ending the season with a world class strike against Bolton.

The best winger in the world, Antonio Valencia, gets in the team because he’s the best winger in the world. He’s been Manchester United’s best player in a season where they somehow managed to push Manchester City to the final day, despite having one of their weakest squads in the Premier League era.

Clint Dempsey has cemented his place as the best player from the U.S. to play in England, and has been one of the best players in the league this season. Spending much time on the left, but equally as effective through the middle or up front, he’s turned Fulham into a solid mid-table side, but his next level performances could attract interest from other clubs this summer.

Strikers
The Premier League has been blessed with some of the best strikers in world football this season. Robin Van Persie finally enjoyed that injury free season everyone hoped he have one day, and we also saw Sergio Aguero fully living up to the massive fee Manchester City paid for him, not least with the title winning goal.

Elsewhere Wayne Rooney weighed in with a good amount of goals for Manchester United, and Papiss Cisse scored goals for fun after moving to Newcastle in January.

Manager
Almost impossible to choose between Alan Pardew and Brendan Rodgers, but Brendan Rodgers would deserve credit had he merely kept Swansea up, but the manner in which they’ve played this season means he has to be the pick of the managers.
